British 10K London Run 12 July 2009
Thank you to all of our runners who took part in this years’ British 10K London Run. With funds still coming in, it is expected that our runners will have raised in excess of £3,000.
Everyone who took part agreed it was a great day.
One of our runners, Sarah, told of her reasons for taking part and her experience of the day – ‘In January 2006 my Mum was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and we were devastated to learn that it is incurable. With the help of Myeloma UK and The Royal Marsden Hospital she has received various treatments, during this time we have seen how important organisations like Myeloma UK are to the development of finding new treatments.’
‘We are so grateful to Myeloma UK and wanted to raise money and support the research in to this illness. Neither of us are particularly good runners so the British 10K London run would certainly be a challenge. On the day of the race we got to the starting point nice and early, both nervous and both eager to start. The atmosphere was incredible, even among 27,000 runners it was hard to believe the race day had actually arrived and we were part of it. There was amazing support from people along the way, cheering us on and motivating us to the finish line. When we crossed the finish line Mum was waiting, she was so proud of us and glad she could be there to support us.’
Wayne’s story – ‘The run was fantastic! I'm really glad I did it; I managed to do it in 1 hour and 2 mins, quite a respectable time for a non-runner I think! The crowds and atmosphere were amazing, I think the crowds cheering us on and the buzz of the moment made me run a little faster than I had been when I was training because my legs certainly felt a bit stiff the day after! A few people came up and patted me on the back as I was running with comments like 'well done, keep going, your Nan and Uncle would be proud', it was really friendly and encouraging.’
‘Thanks for the opportunity; I wanted to do something really worthwhile in memory of Nan and Uncle Trevor and feel like I have achieved something.’

BUPA Great North Run 20 September 2009
The dawn of Sunday 20 September was beautiful. It was looking like the perfect day for the world’s most popular half-marathon.
Myeloma UK had 46 people running to raise funds and much needed awareness of myeloma. One runner, Caroline Marston, whose dad has myeloma, had set herself the challenge of competing in five events throughout 2009 – Great Manchester Run, Edinburgh Marathon, Milton Keynes Half Marathon, Belgium 100km Death March and finally the Great North Run - all to raise valuable funds in aid of Myeloma UK.
Caroline said of her final challenge ‘I had a 4am start on Sunday, so was really tired before I even started running! It was a great race though. My dad and younger sister saw me on TV - I feel like a celebrity now! I finished in 2 hours - not 100% pleased with my time but considering the number of people running, I guess I can make allowances!’
This truly is a run that our supporters seem to want to do more than once in their lifetime, like our long-term supporter, Nick Chapallaz – this was his 6th year in a row!
A huge thanks to all those who took part and to all those who came out to support along the way. The sponsorship raised to date £12,000 – and still rising - will help Myeloma UK to continue to provide information and support to patients, carers and family members affected by myeloma and to fund important research.
Myeloma UK hopes to secure further places for the Great North Run in 2010. If you are interested in a place, please email lorna@myeloma.org.uk or call Lorna Cunningham on 0131 557 3332.

Bupa Great South Run 25 October 2009
|
|
The BUPA Great South Run is one of the best 10 mile events for elite runners, as well as being popular for those who want to achieve a personal milestone. Myeloma UK had 12 people running to raise funds and much needed awareness of myeloma.
Andre Simmons, one of the Myeloma UK runners, was running in memory of his Dad. Andre spoke of his reasons for taking part: “My Dad was diagnosed with myeloma in 2005 and died in 2008. His quality of life was maintained because of the treatments and support he received at St George’s Hospital and it was with this in mind I wanted to help raise money for Myeloma UK to help with further research.”
He continues: “I chose the Great South Run because my Dad came from Portsmouth and it was a good distance, albeit a challenge for my first run. The atmosphere was great, the run was nice and flat and it was good to run through the historic dockyards.”
Guy Munton, another Myeloma UK runner and long-time supporter, also lost his father to myeloma in 2004 added: “Myeloma UK seemed like the obvious choice for me to support when taking part in fundraising events. Since running in my first event for Myeloma UK, the Great North Run in 2006, I’ve continually been impressed by the work they do and the support they offer their fundraisers. The personal touch shown in emails / calls as an event approaches really makes a difference and shows my efforts are appreciated.”

He continues: “The atmosphere in Portsmouth for the Great South Run this year was fantastic and the weather really helped in bringing the crowd out in their thousands. There were supporters all along the 10-mile course cheering us on as well as live bands in a couple of places. The music, the applause and the encouraging words really can make a difference when the running gets a little bit tough! This distance is a good challenge for beginners, whilst not being quite as challenging as a half-marathon (or further!). 10 miles is a distance which does require a fair element of training in advance, although not so much that it takes over all of your free time.”
A huge thanks to all those who took part, it was a memorable day for all involved. The sponsorship raised to date of £4,000 (and still rising) will help support Myeloma UK programmes.
Myeloma UK is currently securing further places for the Great South Run in 2010. If you are interested in a place, please email lorna@myeloma.org.uk or call Lorna Cunningham on 0131 557 3332.

ING New York ING New York City Marathon 1 November 2009
Myeloma UK had 4 runners taking part in what was the largest field of runners in the history of the New York Marathon
Felix Kraty, one of the Myeloma UK runners, spoke of her reasons for taking part: “I wanted to run for Myeloma UK in memory of a family member who suffered from myeloma. It was a privilege to raise money for such a great cause and to help progress an understanding of this cancer.”
Felix continued: “It was an amazing and agonising experience, but one I’ll never forget.”
Our huge thanks go out to Felix and also Stuart Loach, Marco Mendes and Daniel Porton who also took part to raise valuable funds for Myeloma UK. Sponsorship raised to date stands close to £7,000 – all going to help Myeloma UK to continue to provide information and support to patients, carers and family members affected by myeloma and to fund important research.
