Myeloma leads the way in five-year cancer survival increases

Recent data from the Office for National Statistics show that five-year survival rates in myeloma are increasing at one of the fastest paces among all cancer types in the UK.

For women, myeloma showed the largest increase in survival compared to all other cancers. The increase in the male myeloma group was second to only one other cancer type (non-Hodgkins Lymphoma). In both sexes, five-year survival with myeloma reached 33% in 2008 which is a rise of approximately 3% over the preceding year’s data.

Eric Low, Myeloma UK Chief Executive said it was very encouraging that more myeloma patients than ever are living five or more years after diagnosis:

“This data clearly reflects how far we have come in recent years, especially with the availability of new and improved treatments for myeloma patients in the UK. It is tantalising to consider the further benefits that can be achieved in the future with more research, earlier diagnosis and better treatments.”

Overall, most cancer types have seen an improvement in survival rates for both men and women.

Other groups which saw a significant five-year survival increase included women diagnosed with breast cancer (1.3%), men and women with colon cancer (1.5%) and men with prostate cancer (2.7%).

Prof Gareth Morgan, from the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) welcomed the data:

“These are perhaps the most exciting results seen in myeloma for many years. The medical community needs to continue working together to ensure that we keep the substantial momentum going.”
