Charity Golf Day near Swansea raises £2,500 for Myeloma UK

Myeloma UK fundraiser and supporter David Rose held a Charity Golf Day at Pennard Golf Club, near Swansea, on Friday 23 July to raise funds and awareness of myeloma.

When David was diagnosed with myeloma, he was told that he would never be able to play golf again. However after surgery, followed by radiation, chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, he slowly regained his strength and has returned to the golf course.

Determined to do something positive following his treatment, David organised the Golf Day with the support of his local golf club. It was a great success with 46 teams of four taking part, raising over £5,000 to be split between Myeloma UK and the Lymphoma, Leukaemia and Myeloma Fund Wales. This will be added to the £1,700 already raised by David in a golf raffle earlier in the year.

The setting, Pennard Golf Course was spectacular. Situated on the Gower Peninsula, near Swansea it has been voted one of the most picturesque golf courses in the world. The weather couldn’t have been better either, with the sun shining and not a breath of wind.

Myeloma UK attended the event and entered a team (pictured along with David, left), consisting of Myeloma UK Chief Executive, Eric Low and colleague Lindsay Perera, plus myeloma patient and Cardiff Support Group member Chris Walters and Dr Chris Jenkins, a consultant haematologist at the Royal Gwent Hospital. Although they didn’t win the competition, they all thoroughly enjoyed taking part and it was a privilege to be part of such a high profile day for myeloma.

Tremendous thanks go out from everyone at Myeloma UK to David Rose for all his time and effort in organising the day and making the event such a success. Speaking after the event David said:

“Thanks to everyone who participated in or contributed to the day and helped raise such a significant amount. However, I reserve my greatest thanks to all the members and participants from Pennard Golf Club. Since the first day of my diagnosis I have received nothing but the utmost support from everyone at the Club, either through genuine words of comfort or practical help.”
