Myeloma UK has recently joined Patients Involved in NICE (PIN), a coalition of patient organisations and charities that get involved in assessments (or ‘appraisals’) of new treatments by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for use on the NHS in England and Wales.
PIN meets regularly to share information about Government policies impacting on patient access to treatment, discuss best practice for patient organisations getting involved in appraisals and also to work together on areas of shared interest to ensure the patient voice is heard by decision-makers.
PIN is currently chaired by Laura J Weir, Head of Policy and Campaigns at the MS Society. A recent example of the work achieved by PIN is the written and oral evidence the coalition provided to the Health Select Committee Inquiry into NICE, in anticipation of the new incoming NICE Chair.
Myeloma UK looks forward to taking an active role in PIN, both in learning from the expertise of the other member organisations and also in sharing the lessons we have learnt from over 10 years of experience in working to ensure myeloma patients get timely and fair access to new treatments across the UK.
