Hospital staff get baking in aid of Myeloma UK

Over 60 County Hospital staff and patients are baking cakes on Tuesday 21st June in aid of Myeloma UK.

The Bake-a-thon, part of Myeloma Awareness Week organised by Rachel Price-Jones, specialist cancer nurse, from The County Hospital, Hereford, will help raise awareness of myeloma whilst also raising money to support the work of Myeloma UK.

Over 4,000 people are diagnosed with myeloma every year.  Myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow that affects around 20-30 new patients annually in Herefordshire and the surrounding area.

Myeloma UK is a charity which provides valuable information and support to people affected by myeloma and helps improve treatment and standards of care through research, education, campaigning and raising awareness.  Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK dealing exclusively with myeloma and its related disorders.

Rachel Price-Jones, said “We wanted to support Myeloma UK because the service they provide for our patients in terms of both information leaflets and advice over the telephone is invaluable. The Bake-a-thon is a fun way of doing this and allows us a chance to get our pinnies on!

“We would also like to set up a local support group for patients affected by myeloma and this event provides the opportunity to advertise that and to gauge local interest.”

As well as selling tea/coffee and cakes, information about Myeloma and Myeloma UK will be available throughout the morning. A raffle will also be held with prizes to include

  • Dinner for 2 at Verzons
  • Dinner for 2 at the Trumpet Inn
  • Peter Prosser Hairdressing - voucher for Cut/blowdry
  • Dinner for 2 at the Tarrington Arms
  • Bottle of Champagne
  • Supermarket vouchers
  • And many more prizes

The event will take place on Tuesday 21st June at Our Lady’s Church, 101 Belmont Road, Hereford, from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
