Fundraising in the community is vitally important to Myeloma UK – it’s one of our single biggest sources of income. Whether organising an event, a bag pack at a local supermarket or leaving collection tins in your local shops, there is something that almost everybody can do.
Below is a list of top fundraising ideas in your local community.
Encourage family, friends and colleagues to donate £2 for a Myeloma UK pin badge.
Ask a local supermarket if you can pack bags for customers and ask for a donation in return. It's simple to organise and a proven way to raise lots of money. It’s also a great way to raise awareness of myeloma and Myeloma UK.
All you need are some willing VIPs (very important prisoners) and a friendly police station to lock them up. Then the VIPs have to persuade their friends, family and colleagues to give up their cash to release them.
Coffee mornings / afternoon teas are a great way to raise money. Myeloma UK holds an annual Coffee Morning Month in November. If you can’t hold yours in November, you can have it at any time of the year.
Ask your local pub if you can hold a quiz night. Charge an entry fee for each team and persuade the staff to wear Myeloma UK t-shirts. You should also ask the pub to donate 10% of the bar takings from the night.
Race nights are a very popular and enjoyable way to raise money. Just find a venue, club or bar to host the event, hire someone to present the race night and invite everyone you know. Raise extra money by having a raffle and asking the venue to donate a bottle of whisky. Put the whisky in a box and ask people to pay £1 to guess the type of whisky.
Leaving a Myeloma UK collection box at a local shop or business is an effective way of raising funds. Make sure someone at the shop / business takes responsibility for the collection box so they can let you know when it is nearly full and needs replacing.
Get together with friends, family and colleagues and organise a collection. If you do a street collection, you will need to get a licence from your local council; if you do it outside a shop, you will need to get their permission to do so. Target busy pedestrian areas to maximise the amount you raise. Wearing an orange Myeloma UK t-shirt will help you to stand out from the crowd and raise awareness.
If you are in a band, or you know a band that would be willing to perform for charity, then why not organise a concert? You can make money on ticket sales, and ask the venue to donate 10% of their bar takings from the night.
Sporting events, such as a golf tournament, a five-a-side football tournament or a dance–off, are a very popular way to raise money for Myeloma UK. There are several ways to raise funds from these events, including charging an entry fee and getting sponsorship.
Raffles and tombolas are great ways to raise money and can be done on their own or as part of another fundraising event. Ask local businesses to donate prizes. The better the prizes, the more tickets you will sell and the more you can charge.
