Choose an event that plays to your strengths
What kind of event do you want to hold? Start by thinking about your hobbies, interests and skills or perhaps something challenging you've always wanted to try. Organise an activity that is personal to you.
Ask family and friends to help
Spread the workload among family and friends. For larger events you may want to set up a more formal committee.
Understand your audience
Who do you want to attend your event? What is the age group of your audience? What kind of event is most likely to appeal to them and how can you best reach them with event advertising or promotion?
Research your date
Choose a date that will suit your audience and check that it doesn't clash with other events in your community. Give yourself enough time to plan, organise and promote your event.
Pick the right venue
Pick a venue that best suits your event. Think about size, facilities, flexibility, atmosphere, access and ambience. If your event is outdoors, do you have a wet weather contingency plan? Try and get the venue hire for free or at a reduced rate.
Create a budget and do your numbers
Make sure you prepare a budget and set a fundraising target. Be conservative in predicting your income and honest in allowing for expenditure. Visit our 'Boost your fundraising income pages' for ideas on maximising income.
Spread the word
The more people who attend, the more money you will make. Consider posters, word of mouth, email, local media and social media such as Facebook. We can provide you with posters and assistance with writing a press release.
Don't be shy in asking for money or support
Don't feel guilty about asking people to donate or sponsor you, sharing your personal story will often motivate people to show their support. An easy way to do this is to set up an online donation page through a website like Virgin Money or Just Giving.
Say thank you
Remember to say thank you to everybody who has helped, taken part or turned up. Let everyone know the final figure raised and acknowledge everyone who was part of that success.
