As memorable birthdays go, Alfred Lawson’s next one is certain to be talked about for years to come. On 12 December Alfred, a great grandfather and an active fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, will turn 100 years old. As part of the celebrations, his daughter Anne, 60 and son John, 69, have arranged a special party in his honour and he has decided to ask that any gifts be given in the form of celebration giving donations to Myeloma UK to honour the memory of his wife Betty.

Alfred first met Betty at the age of 16 and they had 70 wonderful years of marriage together. Sadly, Betty passed away from myeloma in 2018 and during her treatment, the Lawson family formed a strong relationship with Professor Atul Mehta of The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.

Reflecting on Betty’s journey, Alfred said:

“Professor Mehta took my wife Betty under his care, he also provided us with literature from Myeloma UK to further understand her diagnosis and took her blood samples every 4 weeks.  He was a huge support to us at what was a very difficult time. During my life, I have seen a lot of changes to the NHS, but the one consistent theme is the compassion and dedication shown by all staff who work there. This was again in evidence every time we met with Professor Mehta, he was truly incredible. Betty and I were incredibly grateful for all the support that he gave us and my friends and family would like to thank him for everything he did.”

Looking forward to the special occasion, Alfred said:

“I decided that I have everything in life that I need so instead of personal treats an appeal would benefit anyone affected by myeloma. My son and daughter have arranged my birthday party which I am very much looking forward too. I was by my dear wife Betty’s side when she passed away, otherwise, she would have been at my side on my 100th Birthday, and so my daughter Anne will take her place at my side.  Any gift donations I receive will go toward supporting the important work of Myeloma UK.”

Claire Houghton, Director of Income Generation, Myeloma UK said:

“Everyone at Myeloma UK would like to wish Alfred a very happy 100th birthday. Asking for gifts in the form of donations to Myeloma UK is a wonderful gesture and we will use the funds to invest in further research and support provision for patients and their families. Celebration giving donations are a vital source of income and help us build a better future for everyone affected by myeloma.”
