First Myeloma UK Carer and Family Infoday hailed a success

Patient advocacy news // 25th July 2017

The very first Myeloma UK Infoday designed exclusively for carers, family and friends of myeloma patients has received outstanding feedback from attendees.

The Carer and Family Infoday took place in Newcastle on Friday, 30 June and offered support and advice to 42 family members and friends of myeloma patients.

The aim of the first-of-its-kind event was to bring people affected by myeloma together to share their experiences, hear from a range of speakers on subjects such as the psychological impact of caring, and to learn more about the support Myeloma UK provides.

Of the attendees who completed the evaluation, 100% said they found the Infoday valuable and would attend a similar event in the future. They also all agreed that the programme was relevant, informative and well-suited to their own experiences.

The opportunity for carers and family members to share their own experiences and concerns confidentially, in a safe space, was especially welcomed.

One attendee told us, “A lot of good things came out of this day with excellent speakers. The feeling of guilt is a common one, this was only one of the areas covered and I hope that hearing others expressing their concerns helped. Hopefully it will have made carers/family members aware that there are people around them to support and help.”

Breakout sessions provided valuable information on issues such as how carers can secure financial support and legal considerations for carers.

Another participant said, “I really welcomed the day. It was so helpful to meet separately from my partner and allowed me to acknowledge my role as carer. I have found myself in a role I never imagined and words about resilience were so helpful.”

Following the first successful Carer and Family Infoday, Myeloma UK plans to hold similar carer-specific events in the future to complement its current Patient and Family Infoday programme.

Hannah Bingham, Myeloma UK Services Events Lead, said, “The day was extremely successful and the feedback from attendees was very positive. Becoming a caregiver can impact significantly on a person’s life and our attendees really welcomed the opportunity to network with others in a similar situation, and explore the impact of caring and how it can affect mental and physical well-being.

“We’re excited to build on what we’ve achieved this year and hope to hold more carer-specific events in 2018.”
