Long-time myeloma patient supports Myeloma UK Direct Debit campaign

Since launching our Direct Debit campaign, we’re so encouraged that 180 fantastic supporters have chosen to help us fast-forward to a myeloma-free future by setting up a regular donation. Barbara Dobrin, a 69 year old myeloma patient from London, and long-time supporter of Myeloma UK, tells us why this kind of ongoing support is vital.

“I was diagnosed with myeloma in 1997, the same year Myeloma UK was founded. My family and I have supported the organisation ever since, and I am now a regular donor.

“We were very fortunate that when I was diagnosed we were put in touch with Myeloma UK. The information my family and I received was invaluable, and we decided to raise money to support the important work they do. My daughter, Josie, ran the marathon in 1998 and we raised £56,000 which went towards funding their first two projects.”

Barbara was in remission for 15 years until she relapsed in 2012. She says, “When I was first diagnosed in 1997, there was very little treatment other than chemotherapy, followed by a transplant. Now, there are so many new treatments coming onto the market thanks to the research that is being done by Myeloma UK.”

Myeloma UK is the only organisation in the UK focused on myeloma. It is dedicated to helping myeloma patients, like Barbara, live longer and with a better quality of life.

As well as funding clinical trials that give patients access to promising new treatments, giving a regular donation every month helps Myeloma UK drive world-leading genetics research into developing new ‘tailored’ treatments and to provide information and emotional support to patients and their families.

Barbara adds, “I would not be alive but for the discovery of Revlimid, and when I become immune to this drug, I know that the team at Myeloma UK are behind me and other patients in my situation, to ensure that we get access to the most promising new treatments.

“As someone familiar with living with myeloma and who has watched Myeloma UK evolve over two decades, I would like to encourage the public to get behind Myeloma UK’s Direct Debit campaign. Myeloma UK is a wonderful charity but it relies upon regular donations, and I have no hesitation in encouraging anyone thinking of donating regularly to this organisation to do so.”
