A Myeloma UK Infopack for carers of myeloma patients has been Highly Commended in the 2017 British Medical Association (BMA) Patient Information Awards.

The An Infopack for carers of myeloma patients publication is one of Myeloma UK’s essential guides for carers of people with myeloma. It covers everything from understanding what myeloma is and how to care for someone with it, to dealing with emotions and looking after yourself.

The BMA judging panel described the Infopack, “This is an excellent resource which really takes into account the needs of carers of myeloma patients. It provides a very comprehensive overview from looking after your own needs as a carer to financial issues. It was particularly thoughtful of the authors to include a warning statement before the section which contained sensitive information.

“This is a great resource which you should be proud of producing. This is an excellent, practical, thoughtful and comprehensive publication for a group of individuals who I imagine are quite often overlooked. Well done!”

Myeloma UK Service Development Manager, Maggie Lai said “We know myeloma carers not only play a huge role in supporting patients, but also take on new challenges and have many and varied support needs of their own. We are so pleased that our Infopack has been recognised by the BMA Patient Information Awards. By highly commending the Infopack, the BMA is recognising how valuable this resource is to the carers of myeloma patients.”

The Infopack was produced following a piece of research that was commissioned by Myeloma UK which saw 374 carers complete a survey that focused on identifying the challenges facing carers including: the impact of taking on (new) caring and support roles, and the implications of living with myeloma. As a result of this research, Myeloma UK developed an Infopack specifically for carers which addresses some of the most significant emotional, psychological and/or physical challenges they face. It recognises the importance of carers and highlights the support available to them.

This is the third Myeloma UK publication to receive a High Commended award from the BMA, with previous winners including Kelsey and the Yellow Kite and Planning ahead: An Infopack for myeloma patients.
