Why leaving a gift in your Will matters

Leaving a gift in your Will to charity is a great way to support causes that matter to you. Last year, we were grateful to receive £710,000 in donations from Wills which funded services for patients and families, as well as vital myeloma research.

Leaving a gift in your Will to charity is a great way to support causes that matter to you. Last year, we were grateful to receive £710,000 in donations from Wills which funded services for patients and families, as well as vital myeloma research.

Gifts given in Wills made up almost a quarter of our fundraised and voluntary income in 2016. This money contributed to over 1,220 patients and family members being able to attend 11 Infodays across the UK, funded pioneering myeloma research at the Institute of Cancer Research and helped over 600 patients get access to treatment not yet available through the NHS by joining Clinical Trials.

When patient Jane Nethsingha passed away in June 2015 three-years after her myeloma diagnosis, we discovered she had left a donation in her Will to support Myeloma UK. Her daughter Alison told us:

“Myeloma UK was a huge support to my mum, and to our family during her illness so she wanted to do something to say thank you, and to support their work in the future. We found the information provided on the website and in printed material very helpful.”

Jane frequently called to speak with one of the Myeloma Information Specialists for information, or just to talk things through. She also attended a couple of Myeloma Infodays in London.

“I hope that my Mum’s legacy will in some small part make it possible for Myeloma UK to continue the fantastic work that they do in providing information, pushing forward medical research and actively campaigning to make treatment available to as many patients as possible.”

Last year, financial advice website Unbiased.co.uk found that almost 60% of UK adults do not have a Will. Unfortunately this can sometimes lead to complications and large expenses for family members who are left to settle their loved one’s affairs after they are gone.

Myeloma UK has recently entered a partnership with McClure Solicitors to offer our supporters access to a free Will writing service. You will not be charged a fee for McClure Solicitors’ services – you will instead be invited to consider making a donation to charity. If you are making a Will for the first time or you need to refresh your current one now is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of this offer.

If you have left a gift to Myeloma UK in your Will we want to say a huge thank you. Myeloma UK relies on fundraising and voluntary donations to meet the needs of myeloma patients. If you are thinking of making or revising a Will,  after making provision for your loved ones, please consider leaving a gift in your Will to Myeloma UK. Together we can make myeloma history.
