How we work with the pharmaceutical industry

Myeloma UK is committed to working in partnership with all stakeholders with an interest in myeloma and who share our goals to improve the lives of people affected by myeloma.

Working with the pharmaceutical industry can include activities such as making sure that the patient voice counts in designing and delivering trials or advocating for access to effective new treatments.  Work like this can change lives – it is key to achieving our mission of helping people to live longer and better lives with myeloma and it can only be done by working together.

Why working together is essential

Working with pharmaceutical companies allows us to:

  • Accelerate Research: Partnerships can help fund ground-breaking research projects that bring us closer to finding a cure for myeloma.
  • Improve Treatments: By working together, we support the development and availability of new and effective treatments for patients.
  • Enhance Patient Care: Through joint initiatives, we provide crucial resources and support to improve the quality of life for those living with myeloma.

Our Independence

Whilst we value our relationships with pharmaceutical companies, we always maintain our integrity and independence and ensure that our activities are driven solely by the best interests of people affected by myeloma.

Myeloma UK will not endorse or promote individual products or services. This is made clear to any pharmaceutical company seeking our advice or assistance at the first time of contact.

We do not accept funding from pharmaceutical companies for our advocacy work in supporting the approval of new treatments or for our specific access policy work. We also don’t accept funding for work from companies seeking NHS approval for medical technologies, diagnostics, or other similar products where that work would be about promoting those technologies to improve the chance of them being funded by the NHS.

We are also transparent about the funding we receive from pharmaceutical companies.

Pharmaceutical Industry Funding

Receiving grant or other funding from pharmaceutical companies can accelerate or increase the impact of our work to help people with myeloma live longer and better lives.

All funds received from the pharmaceutical industry are received and dispersed within clear ethical guidelines as laid down by the ‘ABPI Code of Practice, Clause 27 – Relationships with Patient Organisations’

Myeloma UK receives funding from a wide range of pharmaceutical companies. We will not accept more than 15% of our annual income from the pharmaceutical industry.

Why is this important?

The pharmaceutical, life sciences, and diagnostics industries deliver medical and scientific innovation that is vital to improving outcomes and experience for people living with myeloma.

Whilst we welcome funding from industry which helps us to put people living with myeloma at the centre of innovation, we have a duty to do all that we can to ensure that work we do is patient-centred and driven only by what people living with myeloma tell us is important to them. We believe that accepting no more than 15% of funding from industry is a proportionate amount which enables us to accept grants and other income at a level which reflects our expertise and can deliver tangible outcomes, whilst protecting our independence and integrity.

Our current partnerships

In 2025, we received £219,443 of funding from pharmaceutical and industry sources.

This represents 3.78% of our annual income.

These figures report cash received in 2025 and may differ slightly from figures reported in our 2025 Annual Report, which are reported on funds received basis.
