Me and myeloma: Charlotte’s story

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I’m Charlotte, I live in Alnwick in beautiful Northumberland with my husband David and our Border Collie, Coire. We lived in Scotland for 26 years, where I was Chief Executive of Highlands and Islands Enterprise – a Scottish Government agency. It was a fabulous job, which took me to all parts of the Highlands, from Shetland in the north to Argyll in the south. I love being out walking and cycling, and Northumberland is a great place for both of those.

What is your connection to myeloma?

I got to know about myeloma following my husband David’s diagnosis in 2019. Since then both friends and other family members have also been affected.

What helps you get the support you need?

Family and friends are amazing, as are the specialist nurses and doctors at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care in Newcastle. Myeloma UK is a very friendly and helpful source of information and support. We also found the Macmillan team in Fort William where we lived when David was diagnosed were fantastic.

Do you have any advice for someone who is caring for someone with myeloma?

In any cancer journey, there are highs and lows. An escape for a walk on the beach or in the hills can make such a difference when you’re feeling like everything is getting too much. You don’t have to be perfect!
